Education Funding And Success Higher spending on public schools does not always translate to success, according to an article in The District Administration. Politicians and education administrators typically place a high emphasis on spending for schools. When schools lag behind and students are not achieving, the quick fix is always more spending. In June 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau released education funding per-state and per- student for the 2007-2008 school year. The study discovered that the average spending for an American public student was $10,259. The study also found significant gaps between states. New York had the highest overall state funding and per-student funding at $17,173 then New Jersey at $16,491. These statistics greatly exceeded the least-funded Utah at $5,765. New York has boasted fairly strong academic achievements through its funding. Its students ranked second in passing AP exams, and 84 percent of its students took the SAT, higher than the national average of 45 percent. However, New Yorks graduation rate lingers from 48-56 percent, depending on the district. Administrators from New York argue that the states cost per living is significantly higher than all other states, and it has to accommodate for more students. Also, the poverty rate is much higher in New York than other states. If New York continues to post strong academic marks, then it will receive more funding. Utah, despite low funding, has achieved exceptional academic marks with a high school graduation rate of 85-92 percent. Utah administrators attribute their economical success to their teachers, which receive 73 percent of all funding, compared to the national average of 63 percent. Teachers starting in Utah earn $32,000 a year, on average, compared to certain districts in New Yorks $57,000. Utah also has the highest class sizes in the nation. Douglas: Carnegie Mellon University is a great middle ground for students looking for a beautiful, green campus with traditional quads and outdoor gathering areas adjacent to an urban center. The campus is large and singular, considering its position in the Oakland neighborhood of the city of Pittsburgh. The campus itself was extremely safe, and there were very few reported crime incidents in my four years at the school. As part of the student activities fund built into tuition costs, Carnegie Mellon University provides free bus transit and entrance into local museums and venues with a student ID. You do not need a car or bike on the campus (especially in your freshman and sophomore years). How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Douglas: The teaching staff at Carnegie Mellon University are obviously very busy, as you would expect from professors performing research at most universities. With that being said, my experience with professors and teaching assistants (TAs) was extremely positive. Professors and TAs post their office hours and contact information on the first day of every class. In addition, one-on-one meetings could be scheduled with professors and TAs with one weeks notice. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, and socialization opportunities with other students? Douglas: Housing and meal plans are expensive at Carnegie Mellon University, but they are required for freshman students for at least one semester. The school allows you to pick your top three dorm locations before your first day. The rooms and dining areas are clean and are centrally located within a half mile of all freshman dorms/academic buildings. The school has many clubs and Greek organizations that are important outlets for students to develop their interests at Carnegie Mellon University. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Douglas: The School of Computer Science and the electrical and computer engineering major in the Carnegie Institute of Technology are the top-rated programs. All programs are well supported. My major was mechanical engineering. The college did a great job of integrating micro-controllers and other ECE topics into design classes in mechanical engineering. For example, my mechatronics capstone class required teams of mech-es and ECEs to collaborate on a masters level capstone project. The school does an excellent job instilling the fundamentals of engineering. (I cannot speak for non-engineering majors as I have little experience.) One frequent criticism is that the school prepares students for the rigors of a PhD in their area of study, but does not engage students with collaborative design projects until the beginning of their junior year. With that being said, I still felt prepared for the workplace after graduation. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Douglas: I personally chose to join a fraternity at the beginning of my sophomore year after trying a few clubs. I became close with my freshman floormates, but struggled initially to branch out to friends outside our dorm. Being active in a campus-wide club is important when trying to meet a broad range of people. Greek life has a large presence at Carnegie Mellon University at between 20-25%. Each group of people have their own group personalities, and there is a place for everyone if they are interested. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Douglas: The school hosts career fair events that are crucial to landing a job after college. The Technical Opportunities Conference in the early fall semester for engineering and computer science students, alongside the Business Opportunities Conference for Tepper Business School, provides chances to meet university recruiters face to face during a two-day event. Many students land interviews the following week on campus in the career center. The career center partners with a wide range of companies and has a great reputation with those companies. How are the various study areas, such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Douglas: With a relatively smaller student base, the large Carnegie Mellon campus is rarely crowded. There are tons of places outdoors to study or meet friends when the weather is nice. Describe the surrounding town. Douglas: The campus is surrounded by three communities. South and southeast of campus, the Schenley Park network of open parks is a great place to unwind in the warmer months. It is the biggest park network in Pittsburgh, providing great views of downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland. On the west side of campus, Oakland is home to Pittsburgh University. It is an urban area with many great places to explore. Downtown Pittsburgh is a 12-minute bus ride away, whereas Oakland is walking distance. People go to Oakland frequently, but downtown trips are more of a weekend excursion. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Douglas: In 2014, the school enrolled 13,285 students according to the schools website. That figure is broken down roughly 50/50 between graduate and undergraduate students. Freshman year classes are large because there is overlap between requirements for many majors. In my opinion, this is unavoidable. TA breakout reviews scheduled during the week are a more manageable maximum of about 25 students where questions can be answered. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Douglas: I will always remember my experience with our schools introductory economics requirement class, Principles of Economics. Professor Klepper, who sadly passed away in 2013, was particularly influential in my college experience. His class was notoriously difficult, and his exams were also difficult. His exam was the first test many freshman took in college. I scored under a 50%, along with a large portion of the class. Professor Klepper called meetings with every student who scored below a 50% on the first test with their TA in attendance. In our private meeting, he asked how much I had prepared for the exam and what methods I had used to study. He developed extra review sessions (which he taught) for me and the other struggling students. He told me in the private meeting that he was absolutely positive that I could get an A on the next test and a B in the class overall if I was willing to put in the work and attend the scheduled review sessions. He was correct, and his guidanc e during a very vulnerable stage in my college development helped me to understand that a bad grade should motivate you, not demoralize you. How is the ISEE Scored

How is the ISEE Scored The Independent School Entrance Exam consists of an overall raw score and a scaled score between 760 and 940 for each of four sections Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning, and Mathematics Achievement. There is also a single, unmarked response to a prompt essay. Each score report includes a national percentile rank for mathematics and reading. ISEE results reflect correct answers only; there is no penalty for incorrect responses. Score reports also list a stanine, or standard nine score, that segments all possible results into nine groups. Scores in stanine five or above are considered academically competitive for most schools. However, there is no passing level for the ISEE. Acceptable marks differ depending on the institution. Students can sit for the ISEE once every six months. The ISEE in brief The most challenging component of the test is its timing. The Lower Level test is only 2 hours and 20 minutes, with the Middle and Upper Levels lasting 2 hours and 40 minutes. Each section averages roughly 30-60 seconds per question, with a half-hour essay based on one prompt. The exam relies heavily on logic, mathematics, and reading skills. Completing a full practice test and identifying weak areas will be the most helpful method to prepare for the test. You may also want to take a look at these ISEE flashcardsas well. Because incorrect answers carry no penalty, do not leave questions blank, even if you are guessing. Why isnt the essay scored? It may seem odd that an entire portion of the ISEE isnt assessed. Instead, the testing company distributes a copy of this essay to each school along with the score report. The essay serves as an equally administered, timed example of the students writing ability for schools to review. For those students who may not perform well on standardized assessments, this is one method to show your skills outside of multiple-choice responses. What education level does the ISEE test? The ISEE typically tests at a level beyond what children learn in school. Here is some great information on comparing the ISEE and the SSATthat you may find useful. For example, Verbal Reasoning consists of two parts, synonyms and sentence completions. While these concepts are not especially difficult, the vocabulary surpasses average public school expectations. Therefore, students must work to expand their vocabulary outside the classroom, studying either on their own or with a tutor. At all levels, Quantitative Reasoning includes word problems, while the Middle and Upper Levels also incorporate quantitative comparisons similar to those on graduate school entrance exams. Reading Comprehension is based on specific passages, and it asks similar questions for each passage. Last, Mathematics Achievement varies depending on the specific test, but often reflects a grade level or two above the average child. The Myth of Multitasking “Supertutor” Mark Maclaine is Tutorfair's Co-founder and Director of Learning. The first snippet of this series looks at how tutors can create engaging and memorable lessons and also examines how effective multitasking  really is.   The Myth of multitasking Simon had been struggling to get his homework done on time, and his grades were slipping. His parents complained to the school that he was getting too much homework, and they called my tutor friend Andrea to help. In their first lesson, Simon insisted on putting music on in the background. Suddenly his mobile phone chirped with a message. Andrea protested and Simon said “It’s ok, I can multitask.” He stopped writing and responded to the message. In the next few minutes his computer screen lit up with a few more messages and he answered his brother on the home intercom. By the end of the hour he had done less than half of what they’d expected to cover. The  Science behind multitasking   He believed that he could multitask without a dip in productivity but his brain did not play along. The sticking point was the anterior prefrontal cortex, the brain’s control centre. It monitors activity within brain and information from the external world, and decides what is most urgent and relevant at a given moment. Then it activates and suppresses appropriate parts of the brain so the information can be processed. This is what happened in Simon’s brain as he started to write his essay and then got interrupted: In the time it took Simon to respond to the message, the information relevant to his writing had faded somewhat, or had been replaced by information from the message. Thus, returning to the task, he virtually had to start over: “Now, where was I?” Switching tasks releases dopamine, which serves to momentarily increase brain performance, and also makes multitasking a bit addictive. Researchers at Stanford University spent years looking into the benefits of multitasking, and failed to find a single one. They concluded that if you attempt to do two tasks at the same time it takes about 50% longer than if you do them sequentially. Moreover, in numerical and letter-based tasks you are likely to make twice as many errors. Top tips to help your students leave multitasking behind   Hide mobile phones from view: researchers from the University of Texas found that people who had a smartphone within view are worse at conducting tasks and remembering information. If devices have to be used, notifications should be turned off, and they should only be checked at set times Have students ask family and friends not to disturb them when they’re working. Take regular breaks (to avoid boredom which can lead to the desire for distraction)
